Statement on Gov. Snyder rethinking inclusion of vehicles in asset test for food assistance

“While we hope the governor eliminates the asset test entirely, we’re pleased to hear that he is rethinking the inclusion of vehicles in the asset test. We need to help Michigan families get through the tough times. We should be encouraging families to build their assets, not discouraging them,’’ said Gilda Z. Jacobs, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services.

Facts about the asset test on the Food Assistance Program:

  • 29 states do not have an asset test
  • Of the states that do have an asset test all but two exempt at least one vehicle
  • Michigan is not required to have an asset test
  • An asset test will divert federal food aid from Michigan
  • State dollars will be put at risk if error rates go high

The Michigan League for Human Services is a nonprofit, nonpartisan statewide policy and advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that Michigan’s low-income residents achieve economic security.
