All children deserve a healthy start no matter where they live in the state, but babies born in Michigan’s poorest communities are significantly less likely to have that experience. Infants born to women in these communities had a 36 percent higher risk of being born weighing less than five and one-half pounds, according to the Right Start in Michigan 2007 Click for press release.

This annual review of maternal and infant well-being in Michigan’s counties and communities reflects the status and trends for eight measures recorded at birth.

Michigan Profile -- Michigan made substantial improvements on most Right Start measures between 1995 and 2005.

Detroit Profile -- Detroit made substantial improvements on three Right Start measures between 1995 and 2005.

Michigan mirrored national or multi-state averages on most measures of maternal and infant well-being while Detroit had some of the worst rates among the 50 largest cities in the nation, according to The Right Start for America’s Newborns: City and State Trends.
